Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present a survey exhibition of photographs, many of which have never been seen before, by legendary LIFE magazine photographer, John Loengard. The exhibition incorporates over 40 compelling works from Loengard"s 50 year career, which began in 1956 as a freelance photographer with LIFE magazine while a senior at Harvard University, and continued as founding picture editor of PEOPLE magazine. Over the course of his distinguished career, Loengard published 6 books, including "Pictures on Discussion" which won the Ansel Adams Book Award in 1987, "Georgia O"Keeffe at Ghost Ranch" and four books on his years with LIFE magazine. In 2004, he received the coveted Henry R. Luce Lifetime Achievement Award from Time Inc. His subjects include movie stars, writers, politicians, artists, and other photographers, as well as ordinary people engaged in a host of extraordinary activities. The artist will make a special apprearance at the opening reception.
The exhibition coincides with the publishing of "AS I SEE IT" by Vendome Press, a volume containing 80 unforgettable photographs and insightful commentaries which reveal Loengard"s photographic vision and compelling artistry. The book"s introduction is written by Ann Beattie, Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. Books will be available for purchase during the exhibition.
In addition to John Loengard"s photographs, the gallery will present select new releases from the LIFE Gallery of Photography, including photographs by Alfred Eisenstaedt, Nina Leen, John Dominis, Martha Holmes and others.
