Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by New York painter Lawrence Kelsey entitled “A New York State of Mind”. An opening reception with take place on Friday, September 9th from 6-8PM. The artist will be present, and all are invited.
The exhibition title reflects the artist’s long term love affair with New York City, especially the island of Manhattan, which has been the subject of his artistic oeuvre for over twenty years. Born in Ohio, Kelsey moved to New York with his family at the age of three, and was raised in New Rochelle. After time spent in the Armed Forces, he attended The Art Students League in Manhattan, studying painting with Vaclav Vytlacil and Beverly Hale for four years. Since that time, his personal and artistic life have been centered upon the caverns, rooftops and streets of New York City, and the creation of intimate urban portraits which straddle the line between abstraction and representation.
Kelsey’s masterful oils convey the mystery and poetry of the city without becoming mired in its specific details. As described by writer, Ed McCormack,
“Kelsey achieves a real sense of depth and mystery with just a few boldly brushed forms to block in a subject so amorphous that the entire painting appears on the verge of vanishing into thin air…” He pursues his urban subjects “unselfconsciously, playing with light for its atmospheric as well as its purely visual qualities, making his paintings resonate emotionally as well as formally.”
Kelsey’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the United States, and is included in numerous public and private collections including The New York Historical Society, Merrill Lynch, Pfizer, BlackRock and Littler-Mendelsohn.
