The gallery is pleased to announce Ted Larsen’s first solo exhibition in New York entitled “Ted Larsen: Moving East.” The 39 year old Sante Fe artist, highly acclaimed as a master of the pastel medium, made his mark working exclusively in chalk based pastels for the past 15 years. His subject, the landscape of rural Michigan of his youth and the Western trees, barns and rivers of adulthood of adulthood blend impressionistic and expressionist techniques. The result is a potent beauty, intense in color, mystical yet honest, romantic renderings of the land
However, Larsen, a risk-taker in his professional and personal life, has pushed the envelope in the past year by adding two new bodies of work. Experimenting with enamel on 22-gauge steel garnered from local salvage yards, the material of abandoned car parts, Larsen creates pared down, abstracted works, which combine deeply seeded artistic influences—Minimalism, historic Navaho textiles and, in an instinctual, oblique way, the landscape. The result is a marriage of East coast intellectual art history with Western culture and sensibilities, a broadening of the concept of American art. Similarly, the artist has applied this theoretical, minimalist approach to oils on canvas for the first time. These tall, thin paintings of Aspen trees mimic the monumental tree forms of the West, amplifying their inherent physical power and beauty. The juxtaposition of the pastels, canvases and metal paintings will be a focus of the show, and the artist’s virtuosity.
Ted Larsen was born in South Haven, Michigan in 1964. He received his BA from Northern Arizona University in 1986, Magna Cum Laude, with the prestigious Award of Painting Distinction. His work is in many corporate and private collections including Reader’s Digest, Pleasantville, NY; Proctor & Gamble; Forbes, Inc; Pepsico; and Dreyfus.
