Wendy White

WENDY WHITE (b. 1971) is an American mixed-media artist based in New York City, celebrated for her dynamic and thought-provoking exploration of Americana and urban culture through painting, sculpture, and installation. White's work merges elements of sports, pop culture, and recognizable consumer branding to explore cultural identity and societal boundaries. Using iconic logos and found materials, like denim, to critique consumerism and nationalism, her work taps into both nostalgia and contemporary issues, reflecting on how brands and symbols shape our sense of self and collective values. Through these familiar visuals, she exposes the influence of commercialism on modern identity, encouraging viewers to question the impact of branded culture on personal and national narratives.

The “Jeans” paintings, made from deconstructed men’s denim, are a meditation on American symbolishm- a rough and durable material transformed anew.  White challenges traditional painting, pushing beyond flat surfaces to create immersive, layered works. Her approach blurs the line between physical and conceptual space, inviting viewers to consider how consumer culture and brand identity shape personal and collective identity. 

White was the subject of a solo exhibition entitled Low Pressure at Museum Goch, Germany in 2021.
