Bringing together a group of exceptional works inspired by the natural world, CURATED WILDS facilitates a visual euphony of artistic voices exploring the abundant forms and rhythms of the environment through dynamic gesture, color, and composition. The ensemble of distinct artistic styles on view creates a visual harmony in the gallery, while highlighting the individual artists anchoring our collection this fall.
John Beerman is a North Carolina based painter who has spent more than 35 years creating luminous landscapes that celebrate the beauty and quiet power of the American landscape. Drawing inspiration from the Hudson River School and the Luminists, his painting Eastern Sky is distinguished by its masterful use of light, color, and atmosphere, transforming a familiar scene into timeless meditations on place.
Catherine Howe is widely admired for her painterly works that are an amalgam of materials that reference both the baroque and nature. Drawing from nature, Howe’s paintings are influenced by New York School abstraction, as well as rococo and 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Showcasing strength and vibrancy, Howe’s paintings are exercises in the evocative power of paint as a material.
Joseph McGurl is extensively regarded as one of America's leading landscape painters. Designated a 'Living Master' by the Art Renewal Center, his work is often likened to the great 19th century luminist painters, but with a modern sensibility to style and subject. Informed by his muralist father and experiences as a sailor, his work captures marine and landscape scenes throughout the East Coast, including the coastal landscapes of his native Massachusetts.
Robert Natkin emerged as a distinctive voice in mid-century American abstraction. His early exposure to nonrepresentational painting and the rise of Abstract Expressionism shaped his lifelong interest in expressive color and texture. The print on view, Intimate Lighting, translate his painterly sensibility into the graphic medium through translucent color, masked forms, and delicate surface effects.
Yangyang Pan creates expressive abstract paintings that merge traditional Chinese training with the gestural freedom of Western Abstract Expressionism. Inspired by nature and memory, her work pairs a chromatically saturated, high-key palette with emotional spontaneity to create vibrant, nature-driven canvases of striking emotional depth and beauty.
Hunt Slonem is a world-renowned global phenomenon celebrated for his vibrant neo-expressionist paintings and expansive creative practice. Combining a bold fauvist palette with Pop Art aesthetics, Slonem’s work features his iconic menagerie of bunnies, birds, and butterflies alongside an ever-expanding vocabulary of nature-inspired imagery. His distinctively lush, painterly style continues to push boundaries while remaining recognizable across the globe.
