About exhibition

Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is thrilled to present its inaugural collaboration with acclaimed multi-disciplinary fiber artist NIKE SCHROEDER (b. 1981). The gallery will present a solo installation featuring three of Schroeder's signature rayon thread-on-panel pieces. The show will run from Wednesday, December 4 to Saturday, January 25, and is Schroeder’s first installation in New York.

Schroeder’s artwork explores the relationship between color, texture, and form. In her works ‘Fragments 30,’ ‘Convex-Concave 34’ and ‘Fragments 44,’ Schroeder uses rayon threads as an extension of the paintbrush, her creations reveal a meticulous gradient of hues that flow seamlessly from one tone to another. Her works capture a dynamic yet serene quality, allowing the thread to act not only as a visual element but also as an interactive experience for viewers. Schroeder explains, "The quality of the hanging thread creates an invitation for the viewer to interact and is sensitive to the movement and airflow around it. It is the actual piece. The canvas is just the tool to hold them."

In addition to her gallery exhibitions, Schroeder has completed a range of prominent commissioned projects, demonstrating her ability to adapt her work to diverse spaces and narratives. These include bespoke installations for private collectors globally and large-scale works for notable corporate clients such as Uber and Urban Outfitters. Each commission highlights Schroeder's signature techniques and her meticulous attention to color, form, and materiality, expanding the possibilities of textile art while enhancing its presence in contemporary spaces.

Schroeder’s art is a testament to the transformative power of fiber. Her distinctive technique involves loosely suspending delicate rayon threads over custom-made panels, creating an intimate interplay between material and form that showcases her profound understanding of the fiber’s tactility, movement, and color. Integrating mixed media and machine embroidery, her stitches serve as an expressive extension of the paintbrush, adding depth and nuance to her work. Schroeder's signature hanging threads create subtle color gradations that bring a layered, immersive quality to her installations.

Born and raised in Germany, Schroeder received a B.F.A. in Art Pedagogy / Art Therapy. Her journey into textile art was unexpected, stating “I actually did not grow up in a house with a specific love for textiles. It was only in my student years that I discovered my appreciation for it.” Though self-taught, Schroeder honed her skills through years of experimentation and has developed her pioneering method. Today, Schroeder continues to push the boundaries of fiber as a fine art medium from her sunlit studio in downtown Los Angeles. Through her unique use of hanging rayon threads and machine embroidery, Schroeder has transformed textile art into a compelling visual language that has earned her international acclaim.

Schroeder's work has been exhibited at Walter Maciel Gallery in Los Angeles, California, GudbergNerger Gallery in Hamburg, Germany, Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, California, Nadelwald in Berlin, Germany, Bahnhof Ottersberg, in Ottersberg, Germany, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.
