Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present a second solo exhibition of new works by New York painter Lawrence Kelsey entitled New York Idyll: Scenes of Central Park” from Feb 2 – March 27, 2007. An opening reception will be held Fri., Feb. 2, 2007 from 6-8PM. The artist will be present and the public is invited. Previews and private showings are by appointment only. (The gallery is exhibiting contemporary Asian art from Dec. 5, 2006 to Feb. 1, 2007.)
The exhibition of 15 paintings represent the first time the artist has depicted Central Park, transporting us to a place of serenity and escape, a haven from the rigors and uncertainties of city life. Iconic landmarks, including the The Boathouse to the Bow Bridge and The Dakota, and scenes of favorite park fixtures such as carriage rides and hot dog vendors depict the splendor and grandeur of New York, the premier city in the world. The paintings are built with a palette of luscious fall colors - fiery reds, dark emerald greens, golden hay-like yellows and tawny oranges, creating a poetic translation of Central Park. Drama is created, as in all of Kelsey’s paintings, through the play of light and shadow against the elements of nature, grass, trees and water. This is in direct contrast with the artist’s earlier street and skyline works where the scene is dominated by buildings of steel, brick, concrete, steam and smoke.
Kelsey’s long term love affair with New York City, especially the island of Manhattan, has been the subject of his artistic oeuvre for over twenty years. Kelsey’s masterful oils convey the mystery and poetry of the city without becoming mired in its specific details. His signature style, a meeting of the abstract with the representational, the spiritual with the mundane reveals the poetry, and rhythm of life in the big city, reflected in its caverns, rooftops and streets. The intimate urban portraits and vast skyline panoramas portray the many faces of the city in every season, dawn to dusk and through a multitude of weather changes
Born in Ohio, Kelsey moved to New York with his family at the age of three, and was raised in New Rochelle. He attended The Art Students League in Manhattan, studying with Vaclav Vytlacil and Beverly Hale. His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including The New York Historical Society, Merrill Lynch, Pfizer, BlackRock and Structure Tone.
