Lawrence Kelsey: “New York, Dawn to Dusk”

Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present a fourth solo exhibition of new works by New York painter Lawrence Kelsey entitled Lawrence Kelsey: “New York, Dawn to Dusk” from October 2 – November 14, 2009. An opening reception will be held Fri, October 2, 2009 from 6-8PM. The artist will be present and the public is invited. Previews and private showings are by appointment only.



The exhibition of oil paintings and works on paper introduces a new series of works by the artist, whose continuing fascination with New York City’s ever-changing landscape provides for fresh interpretations of the city. Grand vistas of iconic landmarks, as well as the dazzling New York skyline are prominently featured in Kelsey’s new works, but COLOR is the star here. The artist traverses New York’s urbanscape through the seasons and hours, recording his favorite haunts: the Chrysler Building amid the stillness of a purple dawn, Times Square’s nightly hustle and bustle afire in orange and yellow, Downtown’s rainbow of colors reflected from sky to water, and the deep blues of night skies against glowing buildings of the skyline. Through his use of color, drama is created in each work, conveying the unique energy and resultant mood that is New York.



New York City, especially the island of Manhattan, has been the focus of Kelsey’s artistic oeuvre for over twenty years. A classically trained artist, Kelsey’s recent works range from the abstract to the representational, from the poetic and emotional to the straightforward and unsentimental. Responding to both psychological and geographical elements of the city, the artist conveys the effect of being in certain places, and reveals the poetry and rhythm of urban life, reflected in its parks, rooftops, streets, bridges, and waterways. As noted by art historian Berit Fischer, the architectural structures of a city’s framework hold society, culture and human experience within its grasp. Here, New York’s architectural structures - the familiar and iconic - act as structure both for the paintings and our experience with them. Employing saturated hues of high key color, the artist draws us in to a New York of his own invention and invites us to enjoy it in our own way.



Born in Ohio, Kelsey moved to New York with his family at the age of three, and was raised in New Rochelle. He attended The Art Students League in Manhattan, studying with Vaclav Vytlacil and Beverly Hale. His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including The New York Historical Society, Merrill Lynch, Pfizer, and Black Rock.
