MICHELLE SAKHAI: TREASURED ELEMENTS
Mar. 18 – Apr. 30, 2016
Opening Reception, Friday Mar. 18, from 6-8:00 pm
Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to announce Treasured Elements, a solo exhibition of paintings by New York City based artist, Michelle Sakhai. The exhibition highlights Sakhai’s most recent paintings from 2015-2016, and is the artists’ first one-person exhibition at Madelyn Jordon Fine Art. The opening reception will take place on Friday MAR 18, from 6-8 PM and the public is invited.
Sakhai’s abstract paintings from the past year blur the distinction between fine and decorative art. Using gold and silver leaf in a painterly way, the work has a jewel box quality, formed from her mix of oil paint in luscious colors paired with gold and silver leaf. The canvases have wonderful iridescent movement, filled with small dabbed and sometimes linear brushstrokes, accented with the metallic leaf often raised off the surface, almost floating. The metallic leaf provides the work an overall sense of delicate richness achieved by the artist’s craft, sense of depth and composition. In addition, her use of metal leaf gives the paintings a transformative quality, changing the look of the composition depending on light source and time of day they are viewed.
Sakhai’s work embodies an East-meets-West kind of style. Techniques refined from Oriental craftsmanship are partnered with the bold, gestural brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism. With both Persian and Japanese heritage, she draws great inspiration from the art of these richly decorative cultures. She grew up traveling to Japan, finding inspiration from the culture as well as the landscape of the Black Sea and surrounding mountains.
Sakhai’s work simultaneously evokes emotion and intention, reinforced with names that reflect the artist’s spiritual journey including PRANA, REFRESH, TRANQUILITY and TRANSFORM. Her goal is to share this personal journey, reflected in these paintings with the viewer.
Sakhai received a Bachelor of Arts degree with high honors, majoring in Art History and minoring in Fine Arts from Hofstra University. She went on to receive her master's in fine arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. She has studied in Venice, Italy, at Escola d’Arts Plastique I Disseny - The Llotja Advanced School of Art and Design in Barcelona, Spain and at the Marchutz Academy of Fine Art in Aix en Provence. Sakhai currently works and lives in New York City.
