Dates: May 2 – June 21, 2003
Opening Reception: Friday, May 2, 2003 6-8:30 pm

Madelyn Jordon Fine Art is pleased to present the gallery’s first exhibtion of contemporary glass art entitled “Of Fire and Ice.” The exhibition includes the work of prominent glass artists, Dale Chihuly, Josh Simpson, William Gudenrath, Robert Carlson and Jamie Harris and up and coming talents Christina Bothwell, Erica Rosenfeld, Kanik Chung and Sheryl Rubinstein. The exhibtion showcases both the versatility of the medium and the individual talents of the participants. Working with a multiplicity of artistic styles, ranging from brilliant functional objects to challenging works of pure sculpture, the drama and mystery of glass’s natural properties are masterfully harnassed with imagination and technical skill by each artist. Highlights of the exhibition include Dale Chihuly’s “Piccolo Venetian”, a lyrical, translucent vessel encircled by “coils” in dramatic shades of cobalt blue; Josh Simpson’s imaginary worlds, or “megaplanets” and Kanik Chung’s architectural arrangements of vessel forms. Master glassblower William Gudenrath’s crystal goblets, candlesticks and vases, blown in the Venetian tradition, highlight the functional side of glass art.
Although glass as a medium has a long history, beginning in Egypt over 3000 years ago, it was largely unavailable to individual artists as a means for expression until recently. Prior to 1962, Harvey Littleton, a ceramicist and sculptor, built a small furnace at the Toledo Museum of Art capable of melting a type of glass. The “contemporary studio glass movement” was born. Today, the field has seen unprecedented growth. Recognized and accepted as an exciting medium for important works of art by collectors, artists and museums, the gallery is proud to present some of the most extraordinary glass art being produced today.
