Frank Stewart
Frank Stewart (b.1949) is a celebrated American photographer known for his deeply humanistic and culturally rich images, particularly within African American communities and the jazz music scene. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Stewart's interest in photography began at a young age and developed further during his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and Cooper Union. His work frequently explores themes of identity, history, and tradition, capturing intimate and powerful moments that resonate with a profound sense of storytelling.
Throughout his career, Stewart has documented pivotal moments in African American culture, including his celebrated images of the jazz world, which earned him the title of senior staff photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Stewart’s connection to the jazz community allowed him to capture renowned musicians such as Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, and many others, often in the quiet, reflective spaces that show them outside the spotlight.
