Susan Wides
New York-based photographer SUSAN WIDES (b.1955) is best known for her color photographs of scenic views and iconic landmarks of the Hudson Valley landscape where she maintains a studio. Before her shift to the Hudson Valley region, Wides photographed the urban built environment of NYC. Wides’s photographs convey the experience of not merely being in a place, but of immersing oneself deeply in nature, almost as a sensory experience. She creates a unique visualization of a site using a language of the lens both with her approach to the subjects of her investigations and the methods of selective focus she has innovated and evolved since the 1980's.
Susan Wides is the curator of “T” Space, designed by Steven Holl Architects. “T” Space is a non-profit gallery dedicated to the art and culture of the Hudson Valley, encompassing visual art, poetry, architecture, and music. “T” Space plays a significant role in Wides’s practice, as the intersection of nature and art is fundamental to her work.
Wides's work has been exhibited widely throughout the US and Europe. Solo exhibitions include The Center for Creative Photography, Arizona; The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz; The Hudson River Museum, Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale; Group exhibitions include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The High Museum of Art, and The Municipal Art Society.
