Joyce Barker-Schwartz
JOYCE BARKER-SCHWARTZ (b. 1950) is a fiber artist renowned for her intricate, multi-step weaving technique, uniquely developed to explore the intersection of thought and form. Beginning with painting acrylic on canvas, Barker-Schwartz then cuts the canvas into thin strips, which she meticulously weaves together, introducing a new layer of texture and dimensionality to her compositions. This innovative approach transforms the artwork, blurring the lines between painting and tapestry.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Joyce Barker-Schwartz currently divides her time between Philadelphia and Florida. With a career spanning over three decades, Barker-Schwartz has exhibited her works across the United States and internationally including the Hutchinson County Museum (Borger, TX), Matagorda County Museum (Bay City, TX), West Bay Common School Museum (League City, TX), American Craft Museum (New York, NY), Durham Western Heritage Museum (Omaha, NE), Amhurst Fiber Center (Amhurst, MA), Portal Gallery (West Palm Beach, FL), InLiquid (Philadelphia, PA), Giannetta Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Wexler Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Zenith Gallery (Washington, D.C.), and Michele Mosko Fine Art (Denver, CO).
