Barbara Hirsch
Since the 1960's, Barbara Hirsch's body of work has been diverse both in technique and tone. The artist incorporates textural encaustics infused with oils to create depth and repeating motifs that are inspired by nature. Encaustics have allowed Hirsch to manipulate the natural world by using diverse materials including wax, rice paper and found objects. Inspired by the natural beauty and seasonal patterns in her Aspen home, Hirsch effortlessly creates a compelling narrative of color, imagery, and composition.
In 2012, Barbara was selected as one of the southeast’s best emerging artists in the prestigious Energen Art Show in Birmingham. She was awarded Best in Show in 1971 and 1972 at the Birmingham Museum of Art; and in 1973 after her work premiered to a sold out show, her career in commissioned art began. As an active member of the local art community in Aspen, Barbara also volunteers her time with the Shining Stars Foundation, an organization devoted to sharing the mountain experience for children with Cancer and other life threatening diseases, as well as the Saving the Roaring Fork Foundation by infusing the arts in community based projects in young people’s lives throughout the valley. She is an avid skier, world traveler and enjoys exploring the beautiful Roaring Fork Valley with her children and grandchildren.
